Oklahoma sophomore wide receiver Trey Metoyer, a former five-star recruit, appears to be taking an indefinite leave of absence from the Sooners' football team.
Oklahoma WR Trey Metoyer out for ‘personal time’
The Sooners will be without their former five-star prospect for reasons that aren’t completely clear.

Metoyer was conspicuously absent from pregame warmups and did not dress out for Oklahoma’s 20-17 win over TCU on Saturday. When asked about Metoyer’s status last week, wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator Jay Norvell gave this cryptic response:
“It’s not an easy thing to play college football,” Norvell said. “There’s a lot of responsibilities, there’s a lot of things day in and day out and you have to accomplish. It’s more than just running a deep ball. He’s just got to be more consistent.
“He’s going through some things right now. He’s trying to get his hands around it. And so we just wish him the best as he works his way through that.”
Part of the issue with Metoyer may be that, despite his elite prospect credentials, he has simply been beaten out by other players on the Oklahoma roster. Metoyer was listed as a third-team receiver on the depth chart that Oklahoma published on Monday, backing up seniors Jalen Saunders and Jaz Reynolds.

And if there's one position in Norman that doesn't have any issues with wealth of talent, depth. It would be Jay Norvell's WR room.

Barring a rash of injuries, the Sooners should be just fine at the wide receiver position in the short term even without Metoyer. With a combined 43 receptions for 479 yards, Jalen Saunders and sophomore Sterling Shepard are currently leading the way for the Oklahoma receiving corps.
Metoyer has caught 19 passes for 166 yards and a pair of touchdowns during his first two seasons in Norman.
