College football news: Taylor Martinez, Johnathan Gray out for the year
Nebraska, Texas, and Florida deal with a handful of season-ending injuries.

Nebraska’s senior quarterback Taylor Martinez has struggled through a number of injuries during the 2013 season, most notably an ankle injury that he first hurt on Sept. 14 against UCLA. Head coach Bo Pelini said on Monday that the chances were not very good that Martinez would be healthy enough to return to the field of play at any point this season. If Pelini’s assessment proves accurate, it would make for an anticlimactic end for Martinez’s career as a Cornhusker.
Longhorns’ OT win in Morganstown came at a price
Texas was able to pull out a thrilling overtime against West Virginia to keep its miraculous mid-season turnaround going, but the Longhorns’ ability to sustain that forward momentum has taken a serious blow. Star running back Johnathan Gray was lost for the season during the win over the Mountaineers, as was defensive tackle Chris Whaley. In total, Texas could be without six of its starters for this Saturday’s critical Big 12 matchup with Oklahoma State.
Gators’ Morrison tears meniscus, out for rest of 2013
Florida will be without starting middle linebacker Antonio Morrison for the remainder of the 2013 season. Will Muschamp announced on Monday that the sophomore suffered a torn meniscus during Saturday's 34-17 loss to Vanderbilt. Morrison, who made headlines this summer when he got arrested for barking at a police dog, is the 10th Florida player to suffer a season-ending injury. By contrast, South Carolina, who Florida will play this weekend, has had just one season-ending injury--to a backup offensive lineman.
Buckeyes wide receiver says OSU would ‘wipe the floor’ with FSU, ‘Bama
Confidence is a pretty important thing for Division I athletes to have, but it tends to create a stir any time they decide to express their confidence publicly. Such was the case when Ohio State wide receiver Evan Spencer claimed that the Buckeyes would “wipe the floor” with Alabama and FSU, the two teams currently poised to box the Buckeyes out of a bid to play in the BCS Championship Game. It’s hard to blame the Ohio State players for being frustrated about the situation, as it’s only looking less and less likely that anybody other than the Crimson Tide and Seminoles will be playing for the crystal ball in January.
