Week 12 college football picks: Michigan State too tough, USC leads underdogs

Above, Dan Rubenstein’s Easy Call picks the week’s five biggest games. Below, Bud Elliott picks out Week 12’s best-looking wagers. Make your picks in the comments, won’t you?

After last week’s college football games were dominated by huge headliners, Week 12 promises a more balanced Saturday of big games. Let’s pick and choose the best bets where we can.

A 12-11 week brings my season record to 104-90 (54 percent, +$849). 55 percent is the goal and the line at which a nice profit is made, and I am inching back to that mark. Visit OddsShark.com for trends throughout the week.

As usual, I will discuss games involving ranked teams here, and we can discuss any other games in the comments section.

  • I think UCLA is an overrated team, and that Washington is underrated, thus creating value here in the Huskies on Friday night. I think Washington will load the box against the Bruins and bottle up the UCLA run game.
  • There could be some bad weather in the Illinois game, and 34 points is a lot for Ohio State to cover on the road. Illinois’ offense isn’t that terrible.
  • I continue to lose confidence in this Oklahoma team and will take big points against the Sooners when available. This weekend, that means backing the Cyclones of Iowa State.
  • Nebraska is not a very good football team, and Michigan State is. I’ll back the Spartans on the road and believe the defense will create enough short fields for the offense to cover the number just short of a touchdown.
  • Oregon’s season is all but over unless USC goes down. It is out of the race for the BCS title, and Utah stops the run pretty well. Twenty-seven points is a lot.
  • Houston is overrated after having several lucky breaks last weekend against UCF. I look for Louisville to blow out the Cougars.
  • Florida is likely down to its third-string quarterback. It still plays great defense, but I expect South Carolina to win this easily, in an ugly, low-scoring game.
  • USC’s line play is much improved this year, and I think the Trojans will catch Stanford on a bit of a hangover.
  • Oregon State is not a good football team, and Arizona State is dominant at home. Sun Devils roll.
