Kevin Sumlin to remain Texas A&M head coach, according to CBS

Opportunities at USC and in the NFL won’t be enough to convince Kevin Sumlin to leave Texas A&M for now.

Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin has committed himself to remaining in charge of the Aggies, according to a tweet from Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports. He and the school have agreed to a new six year contract, which runs through the 2019 season. Sumlin has compiled a record of 19-5 during his two seasons in College Station, and he was thought to be a prime candidate for either the vacancy at USC or a job in the NFL.

This is only Sumlin’s sixth season as a head coach, but he has quickly become one of the hottest coaches in the sport. USC has long been rumored to be interested in him, but the bigger threat to his tenure at A&M may have been the Houston Texans.

Sumlin spent his college years as a linebacker at Purdue before moving into coaching. He began his career there as a graduate assistant at Washington State, before making stops at Wyoming, Minnesota, Purdue, Texas A&M and Oklahoma. It was at the last of these stops -- Oklahoma -- that he began to get the attention of the college football world, serving as a special teams/tight ends coach from 2003 to 2005, and then working his way up to co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for the 2006 season, in which the Sooners ranked as one of the best offenses in the country.

Houston saw enough from Sumlin to hire him in 2007, where he produced results right away -- the Cougars went 8-5 his first year there, and 10-4 in his second. By the time he left for Texas A&M, he had led Houston to three different bowl games, and in 2011, his last year with the team, Sumlin took the Cougars to a 11-1 record (8-0 in conference), with its one loss coming in the Conference USA championship game. He would finish with a 35-17 record there.

He was no stranger to success at Texas A&M, either, as he and first year Johnny Manziel immediately took the SEC by storm in 2012, going 11-2 with a memorable upset of Alabama -- in Tuscaloosa. They have taken a step back in 2013, but can still finish the regular season at 9-3 if they beat fifth-ranked Missouri on Saturday night.
