Kevin Sumlin ‘top choice’ for USC job, according to report

The Trojans could try and steal the star coach away from Texas A&M.

USC could go after Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin for their vacant head coaching position, as Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Daily News is reporting that the young offensive guru is the Trojans’ top choice to replace Lane Kiffin.

Wolf cites anonymous sources in the report, and also says USC has reached out to former Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ head coach Jon Gruden, though that was denied earlier in the week.

Sumlin started his head coaching career at Houston in 2008, and led the Cougars to a 35-17 record with three bowl berths and two divisional championships in four seasons. He took over at Texas A&M last season, leading the Aggies to an 11-2 record in their first year of SEC play and helping guide freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel to a Heisman award.

Sumlin has no apparent direct ties to the USC program, but his first coaching job was as a graduate assistant at Pac-12 rival Washington State from 1988 to 1990.

The head coach was asked about potential USC interest soon after Kiffin’s firing in September, when his name first emerged as a potential candidate, and responded by taking the rumors as a compliment to the program, saying “It means you’re winning and doing things the right way.”

USC may not be the only suitor for Sumlin after the season is over the NFL is expected to come knocking as well.
