Heisman race now between Jameis Winston and Johnny Manziel after Oregon loss

Oregon’s loss to Stanford had implications beyond the national title hunt.

Melina Vastola-USA TODAY Sports

The Heisman race seems to stand firmly between Florida State freshman quarterback Jameis Winston and Texas A&M sophomore quarterback (and reigning winner) Johnny Manziel, at least according to Vegas.

Winston is a pretty overwhelming favorite at this point, and it's easy to see why. The freshman has wowed the nation while leading the country's most dominating team, averaging 11.8 yards per attempt and throwing for 24 touchdowns against six interceptions in eight games.

Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty is 8/1, and Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron is 10/1.

Manziel has two main disadvantages -- his team is not doing as well as Winston’s, and voters generally don’t like repeat winners. The sophomore has still excelled this season, however, with 26 touchdown passes and eight touchdown runs.

Underclassmen won the award from 2007-09, but at no other time have freshmen or sophomores won the award in back-to-back years. Manziel was the first freshman to ever win the Heisman.
