Iowa State fires offensive coordinator Courtney Messingham, RB coach Kenith Pope

After a rough season, the Cyclones are making some changes to their coaching staff.

Iowa State offensive coordinator Courtney Messingham and running backs coach Kenith Pope have been fired, the school announced Sunday. Both coaches had been on staff in Ames since 2009.

“I want to thank both Courtney and Kenith for their service to Iowa State,” head coach Paul Rhoads said in a statement. “They have great character and work ethic, and have been excellent ambassadors for the university and community. They worked hard to help elevate our program and have been an important part of the success we have had in this program the last five years.”

After reaching bowl games in each of the last two seasons, Iowa State finished just 3-9 overall in 2013. The offense was a problem spot all year for the Cyclones, who rank 96th among FBS schools in total offense. The Cyclones averaged just 4.8 yards per play, a figure that ranked next-to-last in the Big 12.

Iowa State’s offense did show more life at the end of the season -- the Cyclones scored 34 points in a win over Kansas last week and put up 52 in a comeback victory over West Virginia on Saturday. But that evidently was too little, too late.

Potential candidates for the now-vacant positions at ISU are unknown at this point.
