QB Baker Mayfield reportedly leaving Texas Tech to walk on at Oklahoma

It looks like the freshman is on his way to Big 12 rival Oklahoma.

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

Baker Mayfield is leaving Texas Tech to walk on at Oklahoma, according to a report from Danny Davis of the Austin American-Statesman. Mayfield did not receive a scholarship offer from Oklahoma coming out of high school. (Or from Texas Tech, for that matter.)

Mayfield won the starting job at Texas Tech before the 2013 season began and was a major contributor for the Red Raiders. He is seeking an opportunity elsewhere, though, because of a "miscommunication with the Tech coaching staff," and will not play in the team' bowl game against Arizona State. Fellow freshman Davis Webb figures to get the call for Texas Tech in Mayfield's absence.

At Oklahoma, Mayfield would have to beat out Blake Bell to earn the starting position for 2014, assuming that he wins the appeals necessary to make him eligible immediately. If he doesn't, he could step into the first-string spot beginning in 2015.

Mayfield threw for 2,315 yards in 2013, with 12 touchdown passes and nine interceptions.
