Steve Sarkisian interviewed for USC coaching job, according to report

Is a 34-29 career record a big enough splash for the Trojans?

Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian has interviewed with former employer USC about the Trojans’ head coaching position, ESPN’s Brett McMurphy is reporting.

The head coach denied the rumors, saying he had a phone conversation with USC athletic director Pat Haden.

Sarkisian started his collegiate career as a walk-on middle infielder on USC’s baseball team and ended up playing football at BYU a few years later. After one year at El Camino junior college as a quarterbacks coach, Sarkisian was hired by USC in 2001 at the same position, coaching Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart and Matt Cassell. He spent a year in the NFL with the Raiders before being hired back to the same position by the Trojans for the next two years.

In 2007, Sarkisian was given the additional duties of offensive coordinator and assistant head coach. In 2009, he was hired by Washington as their new head coach.

In five years with the Huskies, Sarkisian has compiled a 34-29 record, including a 24-21 mark in conference play, with four straight bowl appearances (assuming the 8-4 Huskies get a berth this season).

Sunday, it was reported that Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin and Boise State head coach Chris Petersen were the top two candidates for the job. Sarkisian was one of 11 candidates we listed as possible choices for the Trojan job at the time of Kiffin's firing.
