Ed Orgeron resigns as USC football interim head coach

Orgeron was reportedly not happy to be passed over for Steve Sarkisian.

UPDATE to the original story: We now have conflicting reports on the FAU news.

---------------------------

Ed Orgeron was “outraged” that USC didn’t give him the permanent head coaching position, according to a report from ESPN’s Brett McMurphy, and resigned despite an open offer to return as an assistant on Steve Sarkisian’s staff. Orgeron will not coach USC in its bowl game.

Orgeron reportedly had the opportunity to stay at USC as an assistant head coach with a salary that would make him one of the nation’s highest-paid assistants. Sarkisian and Orgeron have worked together before -- they both were on Pete Carroll’s USC staff at one point.

Orgeron is already on the hunt for a head coaching job elsewhere, according to Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Daily News.

If Orgeron doesn’t get a head coaching job this offseason, he will be in high demand for an assistant coaching position somewhere, not just because of the success he had as the interim head coach at USC, but also because of his reputation as a strong recruiter.
