Fight Hunger Bowl 2013 final score: Washington beats BYU, 31-16

The Huskies lost their quarterback but the defense held BYU scoreless in the second half for their first bowl victory in three years.

The Washington Huskies lost senior quarterback Keith Price, but were able to regroup and beat the BYU Cougars, 31-16, in the 2013 Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl on Friday night at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

Interim coach Marques Tuiasosopo, who took over for USC-bound Steve Sarkisian for the bowl game, led Washington to their first bowl win since 2010. The Huskies (9-4) won nine games for the first time since 2000.

Price left the game in the third quarter with an apparent rib injury, per the ESPN broadcast, and didn’t return. He completed 17 of 22 passes for 122 yards in his final college contest, and ran for 27 more yards. Price also threw one touchdown pass, the 75th scoring strike of his career, a Washington school record.

Sophomore quarterback Taysom Hill was the offense for BYU, with 293 passing yards and 133 more yards on the ground. With 31 rushing attempts and 48 passes thrown, Hill was directly involved in 79 of the Cougars’ 96 plays.

But outside of 16 second-quarter points, BYU was held in check by the Washington defense. The loss was just the second for the Cougars (8-5) in their last eight bowl games.

Box Score Hero: Hill was a one-man show for BYU, accounting for 426 of their 473 yards. But Washington junior tailback Bishop Sankey takes the cake here with a pair of touchdowns on the ground and 96 yards on 21 carries, giving him 1,871 yards on the season.

Rankings Ramifications: Neither team came into the game ranked, though UW did get a couple of votes in the AP and Coaches Polls. While it was a nice win for Washington, it likely won’t be enough to move them into the final top-25 poll.

But Did They Cover? Washington opened as a three-point favorite, though some lines had moved as high as six points by kickoff. The Huskies easily covered.
