Music City Bowl roundup: Ole Miss and Georgia Tech to renew acquaintances

Georgia Tech and Ole Miss won’t have to travel far for their game in the Music City Bowl. Here’s what our two team blogs are saying about the matchup in Nashville.

The Ole Miss Rebels and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will get together on Monday night in Nashville for the Music City Bowl, and the game present an interesting contrast in offensive styles. The Yellow Jackets are a unique challenge for opposing teams with their triple option offense, while the Rebels feature a potent spread attack.

The biggest issue for any game involving Georgia Tech is how the opposing defense can handle their option attack. If the front seven gets caught out of position or is overly aggressive, they can get cut to ribbons in a hurry. Our Georgia Tech blog, From The Rumble Seat, took a look at the matchup between the Yellow Jackets offense and the Rebel defense.

Unlike previewing the Ole Miss Offense vs the Georgia Tech Defense, this matchup doesn’t lend itself to much statistical analysis. Both units are very good at what they do, and neither has a huge weakness or strength. I think the two biggest factors in who succeeds will be how Ole Miss handle’s the option offense, and if Georgia Tech can finally keep the ball safely away from the defense. Either of those can turn this matchup for either unit.

Meanwhile, our Ole Miss blog, Red Cup Rebellion, decided to take a look at the matchup between the two teams through the lens of history. Ole Miss and Georgia Tech were both founding members of the SEC, but there’s surprisingly little history between the two teams even though they played in the same conference for 32 years.

Ole Miss and Georgia Tech have, very surprisingly, only played each other three times. I do not know how the SEC scheduled conference football games in the past, but clearly some schools never had the opportunity (or wherewithal, perhaps) to play certain conference opponents, with Ole Miss and Georgia Tech being two such schools with regards to one another.
All time, Ole Miss is 1-2 against Georgia Tech, with none of the three contests being particularly close.

The Music City Bowl is set to kick off at 3:15 p.m. ET on Monday, Dec. 30, and can be seen on ESPN.
