TCU reportedly hires Houston’s Doug Meacham as OC

The Horned Frogs hope Meacham can revitalize their struggling attack.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

TCU will hire Doug Meacham to fill its vacant offensive coordinator position, according to Scout site HornedFrogBuzz.com. Meacham currently holds the same position at Houston.

More on TCU: Frogs O' War

In his first year as the Cougars’ offensive coordinator, Meacham has been in charge of a potent attack that averaged 33.9 points and 422.5 yards per contest. Houston’s total offense fell from 479.2 yards per game in 2012, but its scoring average is up from 32.4. From 2005 to 2012, he was tight ends and inside receivers coach at Oklahoma State. The Cowboys’ offense finished in the top 20 nationally on six different occasions while he was a member of the coaching staff. They averaged at least 40 points per game five times.

Since joining the Big 12 last season, TCU has struggled mightily on offense. In 2012, the Horned Frogs averaged 28.3 points and 388.6 yards per game, ranking eighth in the conference in both categories. This season those stats have fallen to 25.1 and 344.8. They again ranked eighth in scoring, and fell to ninth in total offense.

After averaging 11.8 wins per season from 2008 to 2011, TCU struggled to a 7-6 record last year, and they bottomed out at 4-8 in 2013.
