Sun Bowl 2013 final score: UCLA rolls over Virginia Tech, 42-12

The Bruins wrapped up their first 10-win season since 2005.

UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley ran wild, Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas was knocked out, and the Bruins eased past the Hokies, 42-12, in the Sun Bowl on Tuesday afternoon.

Hundley was the star of the show, picking up big chunks of yards on scrambles and designed quarterback runs. The highlight of the game came midway through the second quarter, when Hundley avoided pressure, took off up the middle and raced 86 yards for a touchdown. The score gave UCLA (10-3) a 14-7 lead, an advantage the Bruins would never relinquish.

UCLA notched its first 10-win season since going 10-2 under Karl Dorrell in 2005.

Thomas left the game early in the second quarter after taking a vicious hit from Bruins linebacker Jordan Zumwalt. Just after releasing a pass, Thomas was hit high around the shoulder. The quarterback was clearly shaken up on the play, and walked off the field under his own power after receiving a visit from trainers. Zumwalt was assessed a personal foul on the play. Thomas suffered a stinger, according to the Hokies.

Junior backup Mark Leal entered the game in relief for Virginia Tech (8-5), but didn't have much success. Leal completed 12-of-25 passes for 130 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.

Box Score Hero: Hundley put up nice numbers through the air, completing 16-of-27 passes for 226 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. In addition to running for two scores, Hundley’s 161 rushing yards were more than Virginia Tech’s rushing output as a team.

Rankings Ramifications: Virginia Tech entered the game unranked, and certainly won’t move up after a lopsided loss. UCLA was at No. 17 in the AP Top 25 and No. 18 in the Coaches Poll. The Bruins will likely improve by a couple of spots in the final rankings.

But Did They Cover? The Bruins entered the games as 7-point favorites, so yes, they easily covered.
