The video board wars are raging on in the college football world, as Virginia Tech has proposed a giant screen for Lane Stadium that would be among the largest in the country. The screen had been rumored for months, but becomes more official with the school submitting a Request for Proposal, according to Andy Bitter of HamptonRoads.com.

The Hokies are looking to install a new video board. How does it stack up against some of the others in the FBS?

As Bitter mentions, the video board is expected to at least 48.2 feet tall by 108.2 feet wide. That would make it 5215 square feet, which would give Virginia Tech the eighth-biggest video board in the country. The Godzillatron at the University of Texas has topped the list of biggest FBS screens since it was installed in 2006. It still dwarfs the second-largest in Miami, which is actually shared by an NFL team.
Virginia Tech’s screen would place it just behind the video board at Mississippi State’s Davis Wade stadium, which checks in at 5,217 square feet. The Hokies’ new toy would be a little bigger than the 5,208-square-foot one inside Ohio Stadium.
The video board is sure to be impressive. However, with the struggles the football team had on the field in 2012, it is natural to think the school must be compensating for something.
