Billy Napier replacing Mike Groh on Alabama staff, according to reports

Alabama wide receivers coach Mike Groh is reportedly headed to the Chicago Bears. Florida State tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator Billy Napier is taking his place with the Crimson Tide.

There’s more college football coaching upheaval! According to Bama Online, the Alabama 247 Sports site, wide receivers coach Mike Groh is headed up to the NFL to work with the Chicago Bears. To replace him, Alabama will hire Billy Napier, tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Florida State.

Groh is considered one of the top recruiters in the country and has helped Alabama compile big classes the past few seasons. Groh earned Rivals Recruiter of the Year honors for his efforts. Previous to his time with the Tide, Groh spent over eight years at Virginia coaching with his father Al Groh before joining Alabama as a graduate assistant and Louisville as a quarterbacks coach.

Napier was an offensive quality control assistant with the Tide when they won the title in 2011. Napier was Clemson’s offensive coordinator in 2010 and spent a half-decade with the Tigers prior to moving to Alabama. As recruiting coordinator for Florida State, Napier helped the Seminoles compile a consensus top 10 recruiting class, and will now try and probably step in and fill a similar role to Groh in overseeing the team’s recruiting.
