UConn player in serious condition after fatal car wreck

UConn’s Martin Hyppolite was hospitalized on Saturday following a violent accident that took another’s life.

Mark L. Baer-US PRESSWIRE

UConn running back Martin Hyppolite is in serious condition at Portsmouth (N.H.) Regional Hospital after being in a fatal head-on collision Saturday morning, according to Paul Doyle of the Hartford Courant. Hyppolite was a passenger in a car that was hit head-on by another vehicle on Route 4 in Durham, N.H.

As Doyle pointed out, Hyppolite’s football future is still in question as he faces an apparent long road to recovery.

Bruce Larson, 74, was killed in the accident. He was driving west on Route 4 just before 9 a.m. Saturday when his vehicle was struck by a vehicle driven by Ryan Merchant, 22. Merchant was transported to Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. His injuries are unknown at this time. Beth Israel Deaconess is a Level I Trauma Center, while Portsmouth Regional is a Level II.

Doyle reports the police investigation is ongoing.

Hyppolite has played sparingly in his first three seasons at UConn. He redshirted before recording just three carries as a freshman. He missed all of 2011 with an injury, then came back to tally 69 yards and a touchdown on 19 rushes as a junior.
