Phillip Fulmer sought by East Tennessee State AD

Could Phillip Fulmer be returning to college football?

Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

East Tennessee State University is looking to bring back its football program, and Phillip Fulmer is its first choice for head coach, according to Joe Avento at the Johnson City Press (h/t to @govolsxtra). Fulmer met with ETSU on Friday to discuss playing a role in bringing back the program, which has not been sponsored by the school since 2003.

Fulmer hasn’t coached since 2008, his final year at the helm for Tennessee. Fulmer was on the Volunteers’ staff from 1980 to 2008, serving as the head coach in the last 16 years. He logged a 152-52 record in Knoxville with a national championship in 1998. He was let go in 2008 after a 5-7 finish, just the second losing record of his tenure.

Since Fulmer’s departure, the Vols have recorded just one winning season, a 7-6 campaign in 2009. Tennessee has won just two SEC games in the last two years. Fulmer never won fewer than three league games in a year, and he had a losing conference record just twice.
