Spring college football 2013: Penn State, Florida State get started
The Penn State Nittany Lions and the Florida State Seminoles have to find starting quarterbacks. Plus updates from Arkansas, Alabama and Cal.

Penn State
Nittany Lions head coach Bill O'Brien is pretty intrigued to see how spring practice starts up. The biggest competition for the Nittany Lions will be at quarterback, where the battle to replace Matt McGloin is a two-way race between Steven Bench and Tyler Ferguson at this point. There are significant concerns at linebacker with depth at a critical spot due to injuries and roster losses.

Arkansas
Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema says the Razorbacks are unsatisfied with last year’s performance and are looking to rebound and garner respectability again. Bielema notes the large senior class that experienced that tough season and will be looking to cap off their careers in Fayetteville with

Florida State
Jimbo Fisher held his opening spring practice press conference, and Bud Elliott was there to report for Tomahawk Nation. Fisher said that all positions on the team are open and up for grabs, with no timetable yet set on the quarterback competition. Clint Trickett is the current number one. The Seminoles do seem to have a few spots pretty locked in, like Bobby Hart as the number one right tackle and Mario Edwards and Giorgio Newberry iron cast at defensive end.
Alabama
The Crimson Tide decided to head to their indoors facility and practice in the shade in their second day of spring practice. Alabama will be looking to create an atmosphere of competition, with multiple openings on the depth chart available for backups and newcomers to try and come in and take spots.
California
Ted Miller of ESPN's Pac-12 Blog showed up at spring practice in Berkeley, and mentioned that the quarterback race is three-way between Austin Hinder, Zach Kline, and Jared Goff. Miller definitely didn't count out the true freshman, as Goff showcased a lot of skill and potential in Sonny Dykes' offense.
