Spring college football 2013: Ohio State, South Carolina fire up practice

Here’s your spring practice recap of all things happening around the college football landscape. For a laugh, check out Martin Rickman’s story on every spring practice report ever created in the history of existence.

Brendan Maloney-US PRESSWIRE

Texas

Wescott Eberts was at Texas spring practice on Saturday for Burnt Orange Nation. Connor Brewer appears to be pushing Case McCoy for the backup quarterback position, David Ash still has work to do to improve up to the level of expectations Longhorn fans desire from their starting quarterback, and the Longhorns secondary is looking to improve on their tackling after a lackluster 2012 campaign.

Georgia

Dawg Sports has a writeup previewing spring practice. Who will be the next quarterback in line to replace Aaron Murray? How will the Bulldogs replace the numerous starters who left? More about Georgia spring practice can be found in the SB Nation primer.

Cal

According to the latest reports from the California Golden Blogs, the Bears don’t seem to be any closer to finding a starting quarterback. Zach Kline seemed to be in a good position after last week but saw limited snaps. Jared Goff continues to get significant action and Austin Hinder also looks to be making his mark.

Miami

The Hurricanes defense appears to have gotten better, as have the wide receivers. Improvement will be needed from both positions for Miami to return to respectability. Additionally, numerous Miami players appear to have improved physically after receiving excellent conditioning.

Stanford

Will the Cardinal find someone to replace Stepfan Taylor? The rotation is deep, with senior Anthony Wilkerson leading the charge and Tyler Gaffney, Ricky Seale, Kelsey Young and others potentially entering the rotation. Stanford could be returning to the running back by platoon that served them so well during the Andrew Luck days.

BYU

The Cougars started their spring practice on Monday with new offensive coordinator Robert Anae, and BYU is ready to move to an up-tempo attack. Time for the giant placards of random images! How about an image of fine bourbon?

South Carolina

In the spring practice primer on the Gamecocks from SB Nation, South Carolina has numerous losses to overcome to get back in the SEC hunt, as they look to replace their linebacking corps and their starting two running backs. They do return the efficient Connor Shaw as starting quarterback and Ace Sanders and Bruce Ellington as his top two targets. But there are plenty of holes to fill in a hurry.

Ohio State

The Buckeyes are ready to repeat the mark of an undefeated season they accomplished last season. The offense returns almost entirely intact, with two lost fullbacks, tight end Jake Stoneburner and right tackle Reid Fragel the most significant losses. But the defensive line is gashed, with John Simon the most prominent of the four players moving on as seniors or declaring for the NFL Draft early.

Here’s the spring practice primer on the Buckeyes from Land Grant Holy Land.

Kansas

Kansas is clearing up all the snow that’s accumulated on their stadium. This would’ve been a lot more fun if Charlie Weis had been the one clearing all the snow up, and it was followed up with a video of Weis manually operating a snow plow. Because Charlie Weis is a man who looks comfortable around heavy machinery.

Illinois

Illinois will break in a new coaching staff today, with Nathan Scheelhaase and Reilly O’Toole set to battle at quarterback. The Illini are pretty intact on the offensive side but have plenty of losses to compensate for defensively.
