Michigan football: Devin Gardner gains year of eligibility

Michigan Wolverines quarterback Devin Gardner will be able to suit up in the maize and blue for both the 2013 and 2014 college football seasons.

USA TODAY Sports

The Michigan Wolverines will get an extra year of Devin Gardner. The NCAA has granted Gardner a medical hardship waiver that will allow him to return for another extra season. As a result, Gardner will be playing in his junior season in 2013 and will have the chance to return for his senior campaign in 2014. Here's video of Gardner's reaction to the news.

Gardner applied for the hardship waiver after missing most of his freshman season due to a bad back in 2010. He played three games, placing him just below the 30% threshold to maintain his eligibility for a hardship waiver.

According to Maize N Brew (our SB Nation Michigan site), Gardner is the leading candidate to be the next starting Michigan quarterback now that Denard Robinson has moved on from the collegiate level. Redshirt sophomore Russell Bellomy and freshman Shane Morris figure to be the other contenders for Michigan, although they will probably be fighting for the right to be first off the bench behind the more experienced Gardner.
