Oklahoma State, Boise State schedule football series

Two of college football’s new-money powers will meet when the Cowboys and Broncos square off.

Brian Losness-US PRESSWIRE

Oklahoma State and Boise State have scheduled two meetings on the gridiron, the schools announced Friday. The Cowboys and Broncos will meet in Stillwater in 2018 and face off in Boise in 2021.

Oklahoma State was set to play South Alabama on Sept. 15, 2018, per fbschedules.com, and Boise State has bumped the Jaguars from the Cowboys’ schedule. There is no word on whether or not the Broncos had to cancel an agreement with a previously-scheduled opponent.

For Boise State, the series continues head coach Chris Petersen’s tradition of playing any team at any location. The Broncos have broken through to BCS games on multiple occasions, but they haven’t been able to reach the national title game. It’s likely that the only way that can happen is through aggressive out-of-conference scheduling -- and winning. Since 2008, Boise has played regular-season games on the road and at home against Oregon, neutral-site games against Virginia Tech and Georgia, and a road date at Michigan State. In those games, the Broncos compiled a 4-1 record.

In addition to the Oklahoma State series, over the next 11 years, Boise has a home-and-home scheduled with Florida State, Michigan State, Virginia, Washington and Washington State, plus a neutral-site contest against Ole Miss and an away game at Oregon State.

The Cowboys aren’t quite as bold when it comes to non-conference scheduling. They have neutral-site games set against Mississippi State and Florida State over the next two years. Those are the only non-conference BCS matchups through 2022. Although, Oklahoma State has played Arizona, Washington State and Georgia in recent seasons.

While the impending four-team College Football Playoff will make it easier for Boise to get a title shot, the Broncos probably won’t be able to ease up on their out-of-conference games.
