UCLA player could miss 2013 season because of rare infection

Sophomore cornerback Marcus Rios has spent a significant portion of the offseason undergoing treatment for a rare infection that was discovered last fall.

UCLA defensive back Marcus Rios could miss the entire 2013 season because of a rare fungal infection near his sinuses. Rios will have to sit out at least six months, according to head coach Jim Mora, but Rios said he expects the infection to prevent him from seeing the field at any point this year.

The facts about this particular ailment cited by Rios are harrowing. “Only 12 people have ever had it and eight of them have died,” he said. “Two others recovered and then died later.” Since doctors discovered the issue last October, Rios has endured six surgical procedures and is scheduled for a seventh in the coming weeks.

When the infection was first discovered, Rios had been suffering from migraine headaches for several weeks. He underwent a sinus procedure during the week leading up to UCLA’s game against Arizona State, forcing him to miss that contest. Now he is sidelined indefinitely because of the surgeries and a treatment routine that includes a peripherally inserted central catheter line in his arm through which he is taking antibiotics.
