The Orange Team defeated the Blue Team, 18-15, in Virginia’s spring game on Saturday afternoon. The game included three safeties, as well as a snap that went sailing over a punter’s head. Yes, ACC spring football is here. The Cavaliers are trying to sort out their cloudy quarterback situation and also develop more of a smash-mouth mentality with a stronger ground game.

Mike London doesn’t know who his starting quarterback will be this year, and the spring game didn’t help him arrive at a decision any faster.

Quarterbacks David Watford and Phillip Sims did not turn the ball over, but they didn't post impressive passing numbers either. Watford finished the afternoon 5-of-10 for 55 yards, and Sims was 8-of-18 for 89 yards. It was redshirt freshman Greyson Lambert who had the (relatively) big game, finishing 21-36 for 248 yards and two scores.
After the game, head coach Mike London said he sees “promise” in all three quarterbacks, but no definitive No. 1 has been set. The Cavaliers may conclude spring practice without naming a starting quarterback. Sims has the edge in experience; he played in 12 games last year and completed 56.2 percent of his throws with nine touchdowns and four interceptions. Watford has not played since 2011.
With the quarterbacks failing to impress, the day's biggest highlight may have been delivered by punter Alec Vozenilek. Despite having the ball snapped over his head, he was able to chase it down and get a kick off that sailed 13 yards. The crowd certainly appreciated the effort.
