The Russell Athletic Bowl will get the top pick among ACC teams after the College Football Playoff and Orange Bowl selections, according to a report from ESPN’s Brett McMurphy. It is the incoming playoff system that is requiring the ACC to do some reshuffling of its bowl assignments -- the Chick-fil-A Bowl, a current ACC tie-in, will become a playoff host site, meaning the ACC loses its annual slot in that game beginning in 2014.

It appears the Russell Athletic Bowl will be moving up the ACC pecking order once the new playoff format begins in 2014.

Currently the Russell Athletic Bowl gets the third choice, but McMurphy’s report indicates that it will be moving up in the pecking order once the Chick-fil-A Bowl -- which currently gets the second choice -- is no longer in the mix. That likely won’t be the only change to the ACC’s future bowl lineup; the league reportedly will add the Pinstripe Bowl as one of its tie-ins, and the Gator Bowl is expected to return to the lineup on a rotational basis as well. The Gator was an ACC tie-in from 1996 to 2009.
ACC officials are currently conducting their annual spring meeting in Florida this week, where they are discussing the future bowl situation, their efforts to establish an ACC television network and other big-picture issues.
