Everett Golson confirms his suspension from Notre Dame

Golson’s Notre Dame football career has been interrupted by academic troubles.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Everett Golson announced that he has been suspended for the fall term by the school because of "poor academic judgment," in a statement released Sunday afternoon.

News broke Saturday that Golson was no longer enrolled at the school. Golson still intends to return to Notre Dame once his academic suspension is over, but regardless, the Irish will have a new starting quarterback in 2013.

Earlier Sunday, Notre Dame confirmed Golson is no longer enrolled, and a source told the Chicago Tribune that Golson could have the opportunity to return to the school despite his academic misstep. Golson’s remarks lend further support to the notion that he will indeed have that opportunity, assuming he still wants to take it when the time comes.

Golson took hold of the starting position last season as a sophomore, helping the Irish to the 2013 BCS title game. He finished the year with 2,405 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Now that he is sidelined, the Irish are left scrambling -- veterans Tommy Rees or Andrew Hendrix seem the most likely candidates to serve as Golson's replacement, but it's possible the Irish turn to freshman Malik Zaire as well.
