FAU stadium briefly named after prison company could host new bowl game

C-USA has a bowl game in the works for Boca Raton.

Michael Chang

Conference USA is working to establish a new bowl game in Florida, according to Jeremy Fowler of CBS Sports, and league officials are relatively confident it will come to fruition. The game does not have a name or a venue at this stage, but FAU Stadium appears to be the most likely candidate for hosting privileges.

The venue has some colorful recent history. It was at one point set to be named after a private prison company called the GEO Group, which had pledged $6 million for the rights. That deal ultimately fell apart amid the considerable backlash that it spawned, and the prison firm withdrew its gift.

An opponent for the Conference USA representative in this potential new bowl game is one of many things that the league still must sort out. Conference USA is affiliated with six bowls for the 2013 season.
