Phillip Ely, backup quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide, has decided to transfer to the Toledo Rockets, according to his official twitter account.

Ely has left the Crimson Tide to become a member of the Rockets.

Ely was a redshirt freshman last season and played in six games, completing three of four passes. His transfer brings the Tide's roster to 85 players.
Ely is headed to the Toledo Rockets for a chance at more playing time in the MAC. Ely had reportedly considered several other schools, including South Florida, which many pundits believed was his most likely destination. Bruce Feldman of CBS talked to Ely, and said the quarterback was considering Vanderbilt and Illinois as well.
Nick Saban recently failed to mention Ely after recent spring practices, as Roll Bama Roll notes.
About the only quarterback I haven’t heard anything at all about this spring is Phillip Ely. And we may not, as Saban told the press today that we have too many quarterbacks to look at them all on A-Day.
Ely will be eligible to play for the Rockets in 2014. Given that the team's starting quarterback, Terrance Owens, is a senior heading into the 2013 season, the timing will be ideal for Ely to hopefully grab a chance to start.
