Ashely Lowery, a returning starter at safety for the Kentucky Wildcats, was involved in a serious car accident early Saturday morning and has been taken to a local hospital.

Lowery is considered to be in stable condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit, although the extent of his injuries is yet to be determined. He did not suffer any brain damage, but did hurt his neck, left wrist, hip and right leg. The injuries are not life threatening, according to USA Today’s report.

Lowery flipped his car around 4:20 a.m. and was discovered about 100 feet away from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seatbelt. It remains unclear just how long the accident will keep Lowery off the football field, although the good news is that he should make a full recovery.

In 2012, Lowery emerged early in the season and started all eight games he played in. He ended the season with 43 tackles, as well as an interception against Vanderbilt. The Wildcats went 2-10 during the year, although there is renewed hope for the football program in Lexington with coach Mark Stoops taking over. Lowery is expected to play a big role in UK’s secondary next season.
