Nebraska kicks Ernest Suttles off team for allegedly hitting teammate, per report

Freshman defensive end accused of hitting teammate with a bottle at a party.

USA TODAY Sports

Nebraska Cornhuskers coach Bo Pelini dismissed freshman defensive end Ernest Suttles from the program Thursday, a day after he was cited for assaulting a teammate, according to an AP report. On Wednesday, Suttles was ticketed for misdemeanor assault after allegedly striking teammate David Santos with a bottle at a party over the weekend. The Omaha World-Herald reported late Thursday night that Santos was treated at a local hospital for a cut to his forehead.

Suttles, who was to be a true freshman this fall, was a three-star recruit out of Tampa’s Gaither High School. Pelini had said that the 6’5, 220-pound defensive end could potentially contribute this season on a Nebraska defensive line wrecked by graduation and attrition. He enrolled on June 10, and lasted less than three weeks in Lincoln.

Pelini also announced the dismissal of redshirt freshman linebacker Thomas Brown. No reason was given for Brown’s dismissal, though a Lincoln police spokesman told the AP that Brown had no connection to the Suttles assault. He was a three-star recruit out of Gardena, Calif., and was considered a potential starter at outside linebacker in 2013.
