USC 4-star freshman Steven Mitchell will miss season with torn knee ligaments

One of the Trojans’ top signees in the Class of 2013 out for the season with a knee injury.

Update: Mitchell is out for the season after tearing ligaments in his knee. USC is down to five scholarship wide receivers on its roster.

USC incoming freshman Steven Mitchell suffered an apparent significant knee injury during summer workouts on Friday, according to Ryan Abraham of the Trojans’ Rivals site.

Mitchell, a 5’10, 180-pound wide receiver out of Mission Hills, Calif., was rated as a four-star player by 247 Composite. He was listed as the eighth-best player at his position and the No. 6 prospect from the state of California. Mitchell chose USC over a number of other national offers and was expected to come in and contribute for the Trojans.

There’s already been some reaction to the news from high school coaches and Class of 2014 recruits:

Mitchell runs a reported 4.5-second 40-yard dash, so speed is certainly one of his greatest attributes. If the injury is truly serious, Trojan fans will have to hope he doesn’t lose a step after recovering.
