Jordan Johnson injury: BYU football loses starter for the year

The Cougars have an unexpected hole to fill in the secondary.

George Frey

BYU starting defensive back Jordan Johnson suffered an ACL tear in practice and will miss the entire 2013 season, according to Jay Drew of The Salt Lake City Tribune. Johnson started 12 games as a sophomore a year ago and had 48 tackles to go with 15 pass breakups.

It’s a tough blow for a defense that already was coping with significant turnover among its starting unit, and the Cougars didn’t have a lot of proven depth at the cornerback spot to begin with. Johnson has 25 games’ worth of experience at BYU, and he was an All-Independent first team selection by Phil Steele in 2012.

BYU now must replace both of its starting cornerbacks from a season ago. Defensive coordinator Nick Howell spoke encouragingly in July about the team’s talent at the position, though the growing pains for the back four may be a bit more severe now that Johnson won’t be on the field to lead the group.
