Georgia Tech suspends Darren Waller and Travin Henry for season opener for violation of team rules

The Yellow Jackets will be without their top receiver as they open the season against Elon on Saturday.

Bob Donnan-US PRESSWIRE

Georgia Tech will be without wide receivers Darren Waller and Travin Henry for its season opener on Saturday afternoon against Elon. Head coach Paul Johnson made the announcement on Monday that the two receivers would be suspended for the game for violating an unspecified team rule.

Waller, a sophomore, enters the season as the lone healthy receiver on Georgia Tech’s roster to have caught a pass at the collegiate level. After hauling in eight receptions for 162 yards last season, Waller is expected to be the go-to target for quarterback Vad Lee. At 6’5 and 225 pounds, he has the size to be a tough matchup in the red zone.

Henry did not play as a freshman last season and suffered an injury that kept him out of spring ball, although he is expected to see an increased role in 2013.

The Yellow Jackets will feel the impact of the two receivers not suiting up on Saturday given the lack of depth at the position, although they should have little problem dispersing of Elon. The Phoenix dropped their season opener to North Carolina last season in blowout fashion, 62-0, and finished the year with a 3-8 record.
