Friday’s college football scores: FCS powerhouse NDSU knocks off K-State, Texas Tech blasts SMU

North Dakota State, the two-time defending FCS national champions, rallied from a two-touchdown deficit to knock off Kansas State, 24-21. NDSU scored the game's last 17 points, including a one-yard touchdown sneak by quarterback Brock Jensen with 28 seconds to play. Jensen led the way for the Bison, throwing for 165 yards and two touchdowns to go with his game-winning plunge.
For Kansas State, first-time starting quarterback Jake Waters went 21/29 for 280 yards and two touchdowns. Tyler Lockett caught seven passes for 113 yards and a score, with Tramaine Thompson adding six receptions for 108 yards. The Wildcats struggled on the ground, though, managing just 41 rushing yards. Bring on the Cats took aim at the K-State defense and offensive line.
Texas Tech 41, SMU 23
After some initial difficulties, the Texas Tech Red Raiders scored three consecutive fourth-quarter touchdowns to build a 25-point lead and cement a victory over SMU. Walk-on freshman quarterback Baker Mayfield struggled initially, but opened up after completing a 33-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Davis a minute before halftime. Mayfield threw three more touchdown passes in the second half and ran for a fourth. He finished his first college start 43/60 for 413 yards. Preseason all-Big 12 receiver Eric Ward caught 13 passes for 150 yards. Viva the Matadors was full of glee.
SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert completed 41 of 62 passes for 388 yards, but did not manage a touchdown pass. He did run for 53 yards and a score. Receivers Jeremy Johnson and Darius Joseph combined for 23 catches and 234 yards.
Michigan State 26, Western Michigan 13
Michigan State's defense held Western Michigan to 204 yards of total offense and forced four Broncos turnovers en route to a comfortable 26-13 win at Spartan Stadium. The Spartans took a halftime lead on a late Jeremy Langford touchdown run, then extended it through two Kevin Muma field goals and a Shilique Calhoun fumble return. Western Michigan managed just 11 rushing yards on 27 carries against the Spartans' formidable front four.
As expected, Michigan State has a quarterback controversy on its hands. Starter Andrew Maxwell was ineffective, completing just 11/21 for 74 yards. He eventually gave way to sophomore Connor Cook, who was not much better: 6/16, 42 yards, with four carries for 35 yards on the ground. The Spartans managed just one offensive touchdown Friday night. The Only Colors expects the quarterback battle to continue indefinitely.
Miami (FL) 34, Florida Atlantic 6
Duke Johnson ran for 186 yards and a score, and Herb Waters added 112 yards of total offense and another touchdown, as Miami built a 20-3 halftime lead and coasted to a 34-6 victory over Florida Atlantic. Miami quarterback Stephen Morris went 15/27 for 160 yards and a touchdown. The Hurricanes racked up 303 rushing yards on 38 carries. State of the U praised the Miami defense:
The D was impressive all night. We know FAU is not an SEC team, but good D is good D. The Canes recorded just 13 sacks ALL of last year. They had 5 tonight. The pressure was consistent all game.
FAU quarterbacks Jacquez Johnson and Greg Hankerson struggled, combining to complete 16 of 32 passing attempts for 117 yards. At least one of those incompletions was intentional:
