Georgia-Clemson to host ESPN’s College GameDay for Week 1

GameDay will be on hand for the biggest matchup of college football’s opening weekend.

Joshua S. Kelly-US PRESSWIRE

ESPN’s College GameDay crew will be in Death Valley for the Georgia-Clemson game on Aug. 31, the network announced Tuesday. It’ll also be the show’s first-ever four-hour broadcast.

This will be Clemson’s second-ever time hosting, and its first since 2006. Both teams come into the matchup ranked in the preseason top 10 of the Coaches’ Poll, and the atmosphere in Clemson will be outstanding for the renewal of a classic rivalry.

The Tigers have big expectations after going 11-2 in 2012; the team was the overwhelming choice by media members to win the ACC this year. Georgia has high aspirations of its own after coming up just short of beating eventual national champion Alabama in last year’s SEC title game, and the Bulldogs are expected to find themselves back in that contest when all is said and done.

Additionally, this could be one of the best quarterback duels we see all season. Both Tajh Boyd and Aaron Murray are coming off great junior campaigns, and both could work their way into the Heisman Trophy discussion in 2013.

There actually wasn’t much mystery to the announcement, especially since the crew happened to be set up at Clemson on the day of the reveal:
