Tennessee declares Mo Couch out for Week 3 due to ‘heat exhaustion’

Couch was one of several players linked to improper benefits in a Yahoo! report.

In what must be the mother of all coincidental medical conditions, Tennessee head coach Butch Jones has declared defensive tackle Maurice Couch out for Saturday's game against Oregon, thanks to a curious case of heat exhaustion.

This would be just another run-of-the-mill personnel update if it weren’t for the fact that on Wednesday, Couch was one of five SEC players named in a Yahoo! Sports investigation for receiving improper benefits from agents and financial advisers. Couch, a senior, is the only one of the five who’s still playing college football; the rest, including former teammate QB Tyler Bray, have all exhausted their eligibility.

Now, it could very well be the case that Couch suffered heat exhaustion on Tuesday. He hasn’t tweeted since that morning. It was pretty hot in Knoxville that day. Also, he’s a big dude: 6’2” and 304 pounds, according to Tennessee.

And yet it seems much more likely that Couch is being withheld from competition for the foreseeable future since his amateur status is now very much in doubt. Tennessee issued a statement that it was “aware of the article and are examining all of the relevant facts,” per GoVolsXtra.com, so it seems like only a matter of time before Couch’s status with the team is more clearly defined and nobody has to ask him, “hot enough for ya?” any time soon.
