Top Rutgers back Paul James to miss Louisville game with injury

The junior running back suffered a lower leg injury of unknown severity in Saturday’s game, which will keep him out at least several weeks.

Jim O’Connor-USA TODAY Sports

Rutgers’ leading rusher Paul James will miss several weeks with a “lower leg injury,” according to head coach Kyle Flood’s comments on Monday. Flood said that he thinks James will be back this season, but that the injury will keep him sidelined for at least two games -- the Scarlet Knights have a bye this weekend before playing SMU on Oct. 5 and No. 7 Louisville on Oct. 10, the sixth week of the season. At minimum, that makes this a three-week injury for James.

Though team trainers were reportedly examining James’ knee on the sidelines, Flood also did not elaborate on the nature or severity of James’ leg injury, which occurred late in the fourth quarter of Rutgers’ win over Arkansas.

James has 78 carries for a team high 573 rushing yards this season, as well as six of the team’s seven rushing touchdowns. Junior running back Savon Huggins and freshman Justin Goodwin should see increased work in his place.
