College football news: USC’s sanctions not reduced by NCAA; Brandon Allen to play against Texas A&M

Recapping the news from a busy Friday.

Nelson Chenault-USA TODAY Sports

Week 5 of the college football season is upon us. As most teams around the country prepare for conference play, there was no shortage of headline-grabbers on Friday.

NCAA shoots down USC’s scholarship request

Just a few days after the NCAA reduced Penn State’s scholarship sanctions by two years, it ruled USC would not receive the same kind of deal. The Trojans will officially not regain the scholarships taken away from the program for the 2013 season. In a statement, the NCAA wrote, “There is no comparison between USC and Penn State. USC’s appeal was denied, and there is no further consideration being given.”

Arkansas regains starting quarterback against Texas A&M

Brandon Allen, who missed last weekend’s game against Rutgers with a right shoulder injury, will start against the Aggies on Saturday, according to head coach Bret Bielema. Allen hurt himself diving into the end zone two weeks ago, but appears to be ready to go as Arkansas opens up SEC play. On the season, the sophomore has thrown for 388 yards and five touchdowns.

Baylor safety released after misdemeanor assault charge

Ahmad Dixon, one of the better safeties in the nation, was arrested on Thursday for assaulting a man he believed was breaking into his house on Sept. 16. The man did not suffer any serious injury during the incident. On Friday, Dixon was released on $1,500 bond. It is unclear if Dixon will be punished or reprimanded in any way by Baylor head coach Art Briles, though it seems unlikely at this point.

TCU DE Devonte Fields out with foot injury

Fields, who took home Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors last season, will not play against SMU on Saturday. He suffered a foot injury two weeks ago against Texas Tech and has not played since. The Horned Frogs are off to a slow start in 2013, and Fields’ extended absence will only make things more difficult for head coach Gary Patterson.

BYU’s top wide receiver suspended

Cody Hoffman was suspended for Friday night's game with Middle Tennessee for a violation of team rules. Hoffman leads the Cougars with 10 receptions for 171 yards and is expected to return next weekend.
