3 things to know about Les Miles, LSU’s head coach

Here’s what you need to know about the Mad Hatter for Saturday’s game against Georgia.

Stacy Revere

1. Les Miles is a bit crazy.

Les Miles eats grass.

Les Miles claps with his fingers extended and palms aligned, like a small child still learning how to properly clap. He descends from tall buildings during the offseason. He listens to Treal Lee and Prince Rick. When his future wife told him she was going on a trip to Las Vegas with a former boyfriend, he asked himself what Bo Schembechler would do. He runs trick plays like it’s his job, which, of course, it is.

The Mad Hatter is known for his hat, yes, but also for being truly mad. It is a trait that has hurt him and his team at times -- he is notoriously contrarian in late-game clock management -- but has served him well against coaches and teams that cannot factor his insanity into the gameplan. Whether Georgia coach Mark RIcht is one of those coaches is up for debate: The Bulldogs are 2-2 againt LSU since Miles took over in 2005, but the Bayou Bengals have taken the last two games.

2. Les Miles has a damn strong football team

In 2007, on the eve of the national championship game and with rumors swirling that he was about to leave LSU for Michigan, Miles took the mic and gave us one of his most legendary quotes:

It’s a recurring theme with Miles: In his eight seasons at the helm in Baton Rouge, LSU has finished in the AP Top 20 seven times. His teams have won ten or more games six times. Miles has played for two national championships, and won one of them.

This year's Tigers look damn strong: 4-0, with convincing wins over TCU and Auburn so far. LSU is 16th nationally in scoring offense, despite having faced two BCS-level opponents. Quarterback Zach Mettenberger already has 1,026 passing yards and 10 touchdowns, and the combination of Jeremy Hill and Terrence Magee in the Tigers backfield has combined for 669 rushing yards and nine scores.

3. But seriously, he’s quite insane.

He once ran a fake field goal that included a bounce pass.

The guy is as batty as a dark cave.
