Georgia Tech starting QB Vad Lee transferring: ‘Triple option never really my thing’

Vad Lee is moving on from Georgia Tech after spending one season as the Yellow Jackets’ starting quarterback.

Don McPeak-USA TODAY Sports

Paul Johnson is famous for being one of very few FBS coaches who runs the triple option, a fact that Vad Lee presumably knew when he signed with the Yellow Jackets in 2011. Three years later, Lee has decided to transfer from Georgia Tech, claiming that the triple option was never really his thing.

A reasonable gut reaction to Lee’s statement might lead you to question his decision-making, but let’s keep in mind that college is a time for experimentation. So perhaps some credit is due to Lee for keeping an open mind and trying something that he might dislike so much that he would decide to uproot his life and move somewhere else to get away from it.

Lee still has two years of collegiate eligibility remaining and early indications are that he will be seeking a transfer to an FCS school. If does that, he’ll be able to play as early as 2014. If he transfers to another FBS school, he’ll have to sit out a year, burning 50 percent of his remaining eligibility.

As for Georgia Tech’s quarterback situation entering 2014, freshman Justin Thomas was the only Yellow Jacket quarterback to attempt more than five passes this season. He completed nine of his 33 attempts for 133 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions and carried the ball 33 times for 234 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
