Michigan State QB commit sentenced for body slamming security guard

Video allegedly showed Jayru Campbell assaulting a security guard in a school hallway.

Update, May 30:

Campbell is still listed as a Michigan State commit, but coaches cannot comment publicly on him due to NCAA rules against referring to specific prospects.

Original, January 2014: Charges have not yet been filed against Michigan State quarterback recruit Jayru Campbell, who appeared to body slam a security guard at Cass Technical High School Wednesday in Detroit.

Original reports suggested Campbell had been charged with assault and battery, but those charges appear to be pending.

At the end of the 2013 football season, Campbell punched an opposing player in the post-game handshake line following a loss, and has already been suspended for the first game of the 2014 season.

A three-star recruit, Campbell is considered one of the top players in the class of 2015 in the state of Michigan, and was one of the first two commits in the Spartans’ class. He and offensive tackle Kyonta Stallworth both committed to head coach Mark Dantonio and the Spartans in August 2013.

Chris Vannini at The Only Colors said it’s hard to know what to make of the alleged incident, or where Dantonio will go from here with Campbell.

Is Campbell the kind of kid who just needs to get out of the city? Will this alleged incident prevent that from happening?

I don’t know the answer. You don’t know the answer. I’m sure Mark Dantonio and the coaches will go over the options and get in touch with him at some point to get more of the story. I’m also sure Dantonio won’t make a decision based on public reaction (which is a negative light on MSU right now, even though it really has nothing to do with them).

Dantonio has stuck with kids before. Sometimes, it has worked out. Sometimes, it has not.

We’ll see what happens, on and off the field.
