Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood will hire Ralph Friedgen as offensive coordinator, according to multiple reports. It’s Friedgen’s first job on the sideline since serving as Maryland’s head coach from 2001 to 2010.

The hiring of Friedgen at Rutgers means one more awkward exchange for Maryland in its new conference. The Terrapins are joining the Big Ten in 2014 and they’re slotted in the same division as two former coaches. In addition to Friedgen at Rutgers, the Big Ten East also features Penn State and new head coach James Franklin. Before taking over at Vanderbilt in 2011, Franklin was the offensive coordinator and head coach in waiting for the Terps.
Friedgen began his career at Maryland with a nice run of success, compiling three straight seasons with 10 or more wins from 2001 to 2003. In his first year, the Terrapins won their first ACC title since 1985, ending a streak of nine straight titles for Florida State. Despite rebounding from a 2-10 record and putting together a 9-4 campaign in 2010, Maryland fired Friedgen. He was understandably angry with his alma mater.
Before becoming a head coach, Friedgen had an extensive record as an offensive coordinator. He held the position with The Citadel, William & Mary, Murray State, Maryland, Georgia Tech and the San Diego Chargers for a total of 18 seasons.
