Georgia Bulldogs running back Todd Gurley entered this week as the Heisman Trophy front-runner. Due apparently to dealings with an autograph merchant, he is now suspended by Georgia. Local media reports the suspension could be lengthy.
Todd Gurley suspension means new No. 1s in Heisman and title odds
Mississippi State’s Dak Prescott is the new Heisman favorite, and Auburn’s national title odds are now No. 1.
This changes the national picture both for the first-ever College Football Playoff championship and for the Heisman.
First, the player award's new odds, led by Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott. Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah also moves down, because, uh, he is also a running back. Reigning winner Jameis Winston's odds also slip, due perhaps to Gurley getting in trouble reminding people that Winston has gotten in trouble? I guess. Guessing here.
Auburn jumps Florida State for the top spot in the national championship odds as the Dawgs fall behind Alabama and Michigan State. Gurley’s suspension would make one of Auburn’s toughest remaining games, a trip to Georgia, slightly more winnable. Georgia Tech also plays UGA, as might Alabama in the SEC Championship (though other SEC West team odds hold steady).
And I do not know why Nebraska’s odds change here as well, this time for the better. Georgia and Nebraska are forever linked after meeting in two straight bowls, maybe.
Your new leaders, Prescott and Auburn, meet Saturday in Starkville, so expect one to tumble out of that new top spot.
Bovada’s sports book manager, Kevin Bradley, also has some thoughts that Georgia fans will, um, not appreciate much, but business is business:
Going into this weekend’s game Todd Gurley was our 8/5 favorite for the Heisman, and considering he was at 14-1 in mid-August and he took quite a bit at those odds, he was actually the book’s biggest liability if he were to win the Heisman. So I cannot say I am disappointed he is no longer in the running barring an overturning of his suspension.
