Early shift
Best option: No. 4 Baylor at West Virginia
Spread: Baylor -8
Read: Our Daily Bears, The Smoking Musket
Yes, there are two top-15 matchups in the same conference at the same time; I’ll take Baylor-WVU all dang day. The over/under on this one is a preposterous 79.5 points (take the over, so help us, lord), and Morgantown is the type of atmosphere that kills championship hopes and dreams. If Bryce Petty wants to be taken seriously as a Heisman contender, he’ll have a big day here.
Plan B: No. 14 Kansas State at No. 11 Oklahoma
KSU’s still got Big 12 title aspirations, and why not? The only team to beat the Wildcats thus far is Auburn in a six-point contest, and if KSU can go to Norman and pick up a victory, we’re talking about a bona fide top-10 team here. Oklahoma just beat Texas, but the Sooners looked hung over from the loss to TCU, and we’re getting to the point where OU could really use a ranked victory on its resume. So there’s plenty at stake here, and yes, the football should be excellent to boot.
Keep it in mind: Iowa at Maryland
There's a pretty pronounced dropoff from the Big 12's ranked matchups to the rest of this noon slate, which features only seven nationally televised games. Iowa and Maryland are a combined 9-3 in a power conference, so we suppose that's enough to merit watching, but both teams are maddeningly inconsistent and probably won't sniff the top 25 this year. Check out Maryland's receivers, at least; if Stefon Diggs gets loose, it's showtime.
In case of emergency: Tulane at UCF, South Florida at Tulsa
Hey, I told you the noon slate is slim. Just watch the Big 12; it’s fine.
Middle shift
Best option: No. 21 Texas A&M at No. 7 Alabama
Spread: Alabama -11.5
Read: Good Bull Hunting, Roll Bama Roll
Yes, shocking to see that the best afternoon game of the week will be the SEC on CBS! That never* happens! Both Texas A&M and Alabama look startlingly vulnerable after beginning the year in plausible contention for the Playoff. The Aggies are probably out of that conversation now (and hanging on by a thread to any SEC West title hopes), but Bama’s still lurking with only one loss and more than enough talent to challenge anyone else on the schedule. Accordingly, Nick Saban’s guys are substantial favorites this week. But man, if A&M can hang a second loss on the Tide before the Mississippi State and Auburn games even show up, we’d officially be in chaos territory.
*always
Plan B: No. 15 Oklahoma State at No. 12 TCU
Another consequential Big 12 game hits in the afternoon, and while both teams can say, “Hey, we know a thing or two about putting points on the board,” TCU’s the only one with a potent defense (when it’s not ceding 60-plus to Baylor, anyway) to boot. This is the second-to-last truly tough game left for the Horned Frogs, and few fans in Fort Worth would be upset with a 5-1 record to finish off the first half.
Keep it in mind: No. 10 Georgia at Arkansas
It's the best chance yet for the rest of college football to pick up a win against the SEC West. And even with the top-ranked SEC East team facing the last-place SEC West team, it is by no means a sure thing. Georgia's only favored by about a field goal, and Arkansas has taken foes like Texas A&M and Alabama to the wire in close losses. The Dawgs could be hampered without Todd Gurley on the field, but they still found a way to rush for 210 yards against Missouri last week. We'll see if that keeps up against a Razorbacks D that allowed only 66 yards on the ground from the Tide.
In case of emergency: No. 8 Michigan State at Indiana
This is not the type of game Indiana has ever won — in the last 26 years, the Hoosiers have exactly four wins against Big Ten foes that finished with eight wins on the year, and no wins against teams with 10 or more — but that’s what would make an upset here so wonderfully Indiana, wouldn’t it? Michigan State absolutely cannot afford to lose this game and keep its Playoff hopes alive; even winning the division would be substantially impaired by a loss. The good news is if this game’s worth watching, you’ll know early. When the Hoosiers are overmatched, it shows up on the scoreboard in a hurry.
Late shift
Best option: No. 5 Notre Dame at No. 2 Florida State
Spread: Florida State by -11.5 at some books, down at others
Read: One Foot Down, Tomahawk Nation
There's enough uncertainty surrounding this game, specifically the availability of Jameis Winston, that as of this writing, Vegas had taken the game off the board. ND site One Foot Down is asking Irish fans whether they should want Winston to play or not. But all that unpleasantness aside, this is a deeply compelling and history-rich game, one in which fans are practically compelled to pick sides. The winner's going to have one of the most visible wins of the year, one that'll all but assure a spot in the Playoff, provided a November meltdown doesn't ensue.
Plan B: No. 23 Stanford at No. 17 Arizona State
A pair of the most viable challengers in the Pac-12, one from each division. We’ve got one of the Pac-12’s strongest defenses against one of its strongest offenses, and how this shakes out should probably determine how seriously we can take either. If you combined ASU’s offense with the Stanford D, you’d have a national championship contender; Stanford’s offense and ASU’s defense, though, and you might go 6-6.
Keep it in mind: No. 19 Nebraska at Northwestern
The Big Ten West is a beautiful mess in the making, and one of the darkhorse candidates to the division throne is Northwestern, who already has wins over Penn State and Wisconsin. The 'Cats would love to add Nebraska, as that'd be easily Northwestern's best win of the year (no offense, Lions and Badgers, but c'mon). Ameer Abdullah needs to get back on track in a hurry if his Heisman campaign is going to continue, but Northwestern is unusually stout on defense.
In case of emergency: Washington at No. 9 Oregon
Oregon looked like the same old Oregon as it dismantled UCLA last week, and now it’ll really look like the old Oregon as the Ducks wear throwback ‘94 uniforms to commemorate their program-defining win against Washington — and oh, wouldn’t you know it, that’s the Huskies coming to town this weekend. What coincidence! Washington took a big step forward last week as it erased California, 31-7, but this is still a team prone to ruinous inconsistency.
