Ole Miss reportedly under NCAA investigation for rules violations

The football and women’s basketball programs are the focus of the investigation, which appears to be focused on previous coaching staffs.

Ole Miss is the subject of an NCAA investigation into potential rule violations, as first reported by Yahoo! Sports.

The investigation pertains to the football and women’s basketball programs, and Yahoo! Sports reports most of the potential violations fall with the women’s basketball program. Former women’s basketball head coach Adrian Wiggins was dismissed by the school in October 2012 due to an ongoing investigation into “impermissible recruiting contacts and academic misconduct,” the school said at the time.

Yahoo! Sports also reports the potential major football violations do not involve current head coach Hugh Freeze and his staff, and instead are a part of an ongoing investigation into a previous staff.

This is not the first time the Ole Miss athletic department has been investigated by the NCAA. They received television and postseason bans in 1994 and 1986 -- both occurring after allegations that recruits received illicit gifts, including cash and cars, from the program.
