One of the names thrown about for the open SMU coaching position has been Mack Brown, the former Texas head coach now working as an analyst with ESPN. The Mustangs are reportedly throwing lots of money at him (although those reports were also shot down), leaving but one question: why? Turns out we may have an answer, as it appears someone at SMU seems to think they have a shot at joining the Big 12.
Someone seems to think SMU can join the Big 12
Good luck!

One reason #SMU political ppl are intrigued by Mack Brown is if school has a shot to make a jump in possible Big12 expansion.
— Bruce Feldman (@BruceFeldmanCFB) October 23, 2014 Ah yes, former Big 12 commissioner Texas head coach Mack Brown would do the trick! His 16 years of head coaching experience in the conference will surely mean a Big 12 bid for the Mustangs, home to possibly the worst FBS football team in the country and the worst penalty ever handed down by the NCAA (which occurred the last time they were a part of a power conference).
Alas, some rumors were not meant to be.
DMN: #SMU floating $4M per 8 yrs at Mack Brown. My hunch: sharp OCs w TX ties Tom Herman, Chad Morris or Lincoln Riley make more sense.
— Bruce Feldman (@BruceFeldmanCFB) October 23, 2014 SMU’s not alone in their desire to join the Big 12 -- back in June, BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall expressed the same wish.
