Arkansas might celebrate 1964 title during game vs. Bama (which also claims ‘64)

Surely that’s just a coincidence.

Nelson Chenault-USA TODAY Sports

Arkansas has another huge SEC West game this weekend, hosting Alabama Saturday night in a nationally televised affair. The game is of some significant import for the Razorbacks, who have thus far lost both of their SEC West games -- a 45-21 loss at Auburn opened the season, and they fell 35-28 in overtime at a neutral site to Texas A&M their last time out.

This is the first Arkansas SEC home game of the year, and it’s a big recruiting opportunity for Bret Bielema’s squad. They’re facing the SEC’s most dominant program (at least recently) on national television, so it makes sense that they might celebrate the 50th anniversary of a key moment in their history.

The Razorbacks celebrating a national title team ... nothing to see here, right?

Here’s the thing -- they’re not the only ones that count 1964 as a national title. Alabama and Arkansas both went 10-0 that year, and each lays claim to the title. The Tide was voted No. 1 by the AP and Coaches Polls that season, while the Razorbacks were named national champions by the Football Writers Association of America.

Alabama celebrated the 1964 national title earlier this season, holding a ceremony prior to their SEC opener against Florida.
