Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris, Ohio State offensive coordinator Tom Herman and former Arkansas and Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt are on the short list of potential head coaches as SMU, according to Football Scoop:
Report: Chad Morris, Tom Herman on SMU short list
The Mustangs are reportedly targeting two Texas expats to replace June Jones.

Todd Turner has a very short list. He doesn’t need weeks, much less months. He knows who has a shot and has already advised Hart

Chad Morris & Tom Herman would love the job and will be considered. Houston Nutt is working Turner & Hart. Want a real dark horse???

Both Morris and Herman have ties to the state of Texas, with Morris making his name as a top high school coach in the state and Herman serving previous stints on the staffs at Texas, Rice, Texas State, Sam Houston State and Texas Lutheran. Nutt has never coached in Texas, but has recruited the state while at Arkansas, Arkansas State, Oklahoma State and Boise State, and has extensive head coaching experience.
For what it’s worth, Football Scoop thinks the job will eventually go to Morris.
Re SMU I have said all along that I think Chad Morris will be the next head coach. Nothing I have heard since then has changed my mind.

Wednesday’s rumors come just days after a report indicating that former Texas coach Mack Brown had been contacted by SMU about the vacancy. Brown’s attorney indicated that he did not expect Brown to take any coaching job at the moment, but that Brown would likely be interested in returning to coaching in December. Another former Longhorn, Major Applewhite, applied for the job in September.
