Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon humiliated Nebraska's defense for 408 yards in a 59-24 Badger rout. That's a new FBS record, breaking the 406 that TCU's LaDainian Tomlinson put up against UTEP on Nov. 20, 1999.
Melvin Gordon breaks FBS single-game rushing record IN THREE QUARTERS
Wisconsin’s running back is punching the heck out of his December ticket to New York City, adding an absurd performance to his nation-leading résumé.
And Gordon did that on just 25 carries against a Huskers defense that ranked No. 20 in the country in yards allowed per play -- so this was not comparable to Tomlinson’s 43 carries against a mediocre UTEP. Furthermore, Gordon only played three quarters and spent the fourth quarter dancing on the sideline.
More numbers. Wake Forest entered Saturday with 283 rushing yards on the season; Gordon topped that against Nebraska in 37 minutes. The previous Wisconsin game record was 339, by Ron Dayne against Hawaii in 1996; Gordon broke that against Nebraska with more than 20 minutes to go. The previous Big Ten record was Indiana’s Anthony Thompson, with 377 against Wisconsin in 1989; Gordon broke that with about 17 minutes to go.
Gordon was already the country’s leader in yards from scrimmage per game, with 176. In eight games against FBS opponents, he’d posted 190.5, 16.7 more than No. 2, Boise State’s Jay Ajayi. That was already the best mark against FBS opponents since at least 2008, and it just soared.
Here were the records for each level entering Saturday:
- FBS: 406 by LaDainian Tomlinson, TCU vs. UTEP Nov. 20, 1999
- Division I: 437 by Maurice Hicks, North Carolina A&T vs. Morgan State (FCS), Oct. 6, 2001
- NCAA: 465 by Cartel Brooks, Heidelberg vs. Baldwin Wallace (D3), Nov. 16, 2013

— LaDainian Tomlinson (@LT_21) November 15, 2014 Gordon was an afterthought in the Heisman Trophy conversation, which was a joke. That's done now.
