Florida finally fired Will Muschamp Monday, opening up one of college football’s biggest jobs and causing a number of high-profile names to be raised as potential replacement candidates. Two of the most talked about candidates were Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen (the Gators’ former offensive coordinator) and Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez. According to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy, neither will be considered for the position.
Dan Mullen and Rich Rodriguez not among Florida candidates, per report
ESPN’s Brett McMurphy reports two of the most popular names are out of the running.

Mullen followed Urban Meyer from Utah to Bowling Green to Florida, serving as the Gators’ offensive coordinator from 2005-08. During his time in Gainesville, Florida won two national championships. FootballScoop reported Monday they had heard there was “something between” Mullen and athletic director Jeremy Foley that could prevent a potential move for Mullen.
Rodriguez first burst onto the national scene with West Virginia, where he led the Mountaineers to three straight 10-win seasons and four conference titles in six seasons. He was hired away by Michigan before the 2008 season but was dismissed after posting a 15-22 record in three seasons. Since being hired by Arizona, Rodriguez has led them to back-to-back eight-win seasons and has made them a constant presence in the top-25 rankings this season.
Mullen and Rodriguez were among the 7+ candidates SB Nation thought could replace Muschamp at Florida. Plenty of other names remain, including Arizona State head coach Todd Graham and former Florida head coach Steve Spurrier.
